Belle of the Wabash

(April 30, May 1-2, 2010)

Synopsis: This Dessert Theater offering is a musical melodrama by Mike Craver, who also wrote Radio Gals (performed by the MRPDT in Spring, 2008) and Bosh and Moonshine (performed in Spring, 2009).

Set in Northwest Illinois in 1884, Belle is the story of a motley crew of steamboat performers who get shipwrecked on the banks of the Mississippi near Galena. After meeting a young 'native' guide, the crew boards an Illinois Central Railroad train and gets off at Orangeville, home of a bone fide opera house. They endear themselves to the locals, putting on shows and having "adventures" until their money is gone and so is their welcome!

The music for Belle tends toward Old West Music Hall styles; the storyline is a prequel to Bosh and Moonshine.
